Aces Over Brooklyn: Independent Brooklyn Aces Coverage Rotating Header Image

Aces, Bears Pregame Thoughts

If any team needed a game against the Hudson Valley Bears right now, it would be the Brooklyn Aces.

Despite having a 10-point lead over the New Jersey Rockhoppers for the top spot in the EPHL, Brooklyn has been unable to muster offense against them and their arch rivals the Danbury Mad Hatters.

Scoring 14 goals in their last two games against Hudson Valley, look for the Aces to take out their frustration on the last place Bears today.

However, expect a few other things as well.

Over the past few games, the Aces offense has been struggling to get goals. This has stemmed from the defense’s inability to take shots from the point that forwards can control from the rebound or while in traffic in front of the net. Unable to get a forward in front of the net, the Aces have seriously limited their defense’s ability to produce offensively. It’s something that Aces head coach Chris Firriolo wants to see more of, so expect it to be implemented and experimented with more today.

With talented offensive defensemen in Doug Hoffman, Rob Miller, Andrew Scampoli and Ian McLoughlin, if the Aces can get them the puck in that hot zone, in between the blue line and the top of the circles and have a player or two in front of the net looking for a tip, they’ll have no problem producing offensively, against any team in the league. However, as previously stated, it’s been something they’ve had problems with over their last 10 games.

In order for the Aces offense to rekindle their fire, players like Mike Thomson, Chris Holmes and even Jesse Felten will have to be buzzing in front of the net. Guys like Mike Christensen, Kyle McCullough and C.J. Tozzo haven’t let up offensively all season, but somehow, the Aces still find themselves having problems defeating the better teams in this league. If that is going to stop, the secondary scorers will have to start producing more.

Expect some of that today, while the Aces begin to plan for their next game with New Jersey on the Mar. 13.
